Meet Avismita Bhattacharyya: The 3rd Winner of WallMag Wedding Photography Awards 2020

WallMag: Why did you decide that wedding photography was the best form of expression for you?

Every wedding is spontaneous, energetic, and full of colors, and varied in all aspects. So, to capture the wedding, we need to be extremely patient and super quick to frame those rare moments filled with emotions that will not come back.

When I travel across India to capture the wedding from a different state, I learn a lot of things about the different cultural aspects associated with every wedding. This intrigues me a lot.

WallMag: How long have you been shooting weddings? How many weddings have you photographed?

I have been associated with this industry for 5 years, and in 2017, I started my company Charcoal and Vermillion. I generally do not keep a count of the wedding coverage, but by now, it should be more than 100.

WallMag: Where do you find ideas for your photography work?

Photography ideas are not given by anyone. The technical aspect of a camera can be taught or learned via a different medium, but framing sense must come from within. The more you think about framing, the more you talk about framing it, opens new ideas every time.

WallMag: Can you please share one "Happiest Moment in your Photography life"?

Publication of one of my self-portrait series in India’s oldest Photography Magazine: Better Photography.

WallMag: What are your services offered, and where one can order your services?

We offer wedding coverage, baby shoots, and maternity shoots. They can reach us through Instagram or via Facebook.

WallMag: Exactly what it is you want to say with your photographs, and how do you actually get your photographs to do that?

I want to capture the untold story happening at every wedding. I have a huge inclination towards the photojournalistic approach. Thereby, I try to convey raw emotions through my photographs.

WallMag: Before you start to shoot, how do you prepare yourself?

I sleep well before the shoot to keep my heads clear. Previsualization helps a lot, but in wedding photography, the photographers do not have prior access to the wedding location. It becomes easier for me and the team when we get to work on the location where we have worked earlier. Otherwise, it's all spontaneous which comes with loads of practice.

WallMag: How will you elaborate on your memorable experience being a photographer?

My journey is always uphill and strenuous. But since I have started just 5 years back, I have got some wonderful persons by my side who have always helped me and guided me about the right and the wrong. Every episode in this journey is memorable, and I hope I can continue to learn new things and refine my way of photography.

WallMag: Can you share your most challenging shoot?

Every wedding shoot is challenging and opens up new ideas for me. I consider every project of my company as the most challenging innings. It is the sole responsibility of a photographer to capture those rare moments which won’t be seen by other people. We have gifted eyes, and that is why clients pay us to capture the most memorable day in their life.

WallMag: What's the most memorable wedding you've shot?

My first wedding assignment under Sutirtha Basu.

WallMag: Could you tell us a bit about the gear you use and the camera/lenses you could not live without, as well as the gear you usually bring on photo-shoots.

I always carry Nikon Z6 coupled with 35 mm prime and Nikon 750 with the widely used wedding lens 24-70 in my bag.

WallMag: As a photographer, how far do you think participating in awards/contests is important for a photography career.

Every award and every smallest appreciation act as a catalyst for every photographer. It's always good to participate in competitions to know where we stand. But we need to keep one thing in mind, before participating in any competitions we must know about the credibility of the jury for the competition.

WallMag: The days of editing and manipulating photos in a darkroom are pretty much over, but that doesn't mean the photographs we take today with our digital SLR cameras don't need post-prod work. From the minute the pictures are in your computer after a shoot and the moment they are in the client's hands- what happens? What does your workflow look like? What tools/software/apps do you use?

The world of photography has revolutionized in the last 2 decades. I do not have any fixed workflow to edit images, I guess no one has that. So, it is difficult to explain the same.

I use the most common software: Photoshop and Lightroom for my editing work.

WallMag: What would you say to the newbie photographers who want to build a career in wedding photography in one line?

Anyone who wants to pursue a career in the photography industry should keep one thing in mind this journey is not a piece of a cakewalk. But once you prove your capability through your frames, then there is no looking back. The market is open and filled with lots of opportunities in the industry especially in the wedding photography industry. You must hit the right string at the right time.

WallMag: What is your greatest strength? How does it help you as a Wedding Photographer?

Eager to learn and listen to every people who had crossed my path in the last 5 years. I believe that a good listener learns a lot than a good speaker.

WallMag: What would you say is usually the most common weakness for a photographer who is just starting in the business.

Fear of failure. If we surpass this nothing can stop you from becoming what you want.

WallMag: Could you please describe your experience of participating in WallMag Wedding photography awards 2020 and marking your presence as top 3rd winner? What tips would you like to give to upcoming participants?

It has been an absolute pleasure for me to get recognized in the WallMag competition. There were many wonderful submissions in this segment so it's an honor for me to make it to TOP 3.
