The Fallas of Valencia
La Fallas is a carnival of bonfires, fiesta, fireworks and a healthy dose of satire. On each night there is a firework display in the old river bed. Las Fallas is an event not for the faint of heart, as everywhere you go this month, young and old will be playing with firecrackers and “pop-pops” in the streets with more fireworks, more gunpowder, more noise every day. The festival centers around large, elaborate sculptures made from wood and paper mâché, sometimes 10 or 15 meters high. Every fallas sculpture feature one or two small, carefully-fainted wooden figures, called ninonts. The sculptures are paraded around the city during the week. On the last day of the festival, the sculptures are set ablaze, known as "la crema".
