Lake Hillier is a saline lake that stays pink all year round. It is about 600 meters in length and about 250 meters in width. It is ten times saltier than the ocean but it is safe to swim in. For six years, in the early 1900s, Lake Hillier was used for salt mining. Its pink color is a permanent characteristic that does not change when water is transferred to a container. The reason behind its pink color is still not known but it is expected that there are saltwater algae such as Dunaliella saline, which in very salty water produces a red pigment. Only microorganisms exist in this lake and there are no traces of any kind of fish. The lake is difficult to access via land due to the dense forests.
