How did your journey in photography begin?
Photography has been a part of my life since childhood. Our family photography business was started by my father nearly 30 years ago. He is a talented artist, and his passion inspired me to follow the same path. From a young age, I was fascinated by cameras and curious about how they worked. I was always eager to understand the science and creativity behind great photographs. I spent a lot of time learning about indoor and outdoor photography, camera techniques, composition, and studio lighting. I regularly practiced with my brothers and friends, experimenting with different settings and ideas to capture the perfect shot. Over time, that curiosity grew into a passion, and photography became more than just a family legacy—it became my way of expressing stories, emotions, and perspectives.
What was the first moment you realized street photography was your passion?
The moment I realized street photography was my passion was when I started observing the life happening around me every day. I found inspiration in ordinary people, their emotions, daily activities, and the struggles they face. I was fascinated by how a single photograph could capture a moment and tell a powerful story without words.
How has your experience and style evolved over the years?
Over the years, my photography has evolved from focusing on technical skills to capturing meaningful stories and emotions. With experience, I learned to see beyond the frame and create images that reflect real-life moments, human connections, and authentic storytelling.
What or who has been your biggest creative influence in photography?
My biggest creative influence has been my father. Growing up in a photography family, I learned a lot by watching his dedication, creativity, and passion for capturing moments. Beyond that, everyday life, people, their emotions, and real stories continue to inspire my photography and shape my creative vision.
What are some of your favorite street photographs that best represent your style?
1. Carrying Tomorrow: A mother walks through the countryside carrying her child and daily necessities, symbolizing love, sacrifice, and the strength to keep moving forward despite life's challenges. 2. The Silent Provider: A fisherman rests beside a rushing river, his net in hand, reflecting the patience, resilience, and hard work of those who depend on nature for their livelihood. 3. Strength Beyond Years: An elderly woman moves forward with determination and grace, embodying a lifetime of resilience, wisdom, and unwavering courage. 4. Wisdom at the Threshold: Framed by a doorway, an elderly man gazes outward with quiet dignity, his face telling stories of experience, perseverance, and a life well lived. 5. Power of the Setting Sun: A glowing sun aligns perfectly above an electric pole, creating a striking silhouette against the fiery sky. The image captures the harmony between nature and human infrastructure, where light, energy, and time converge in a single fleeting moment.
Which portrait best showcases your ability to capture emotion, and what creative choices did you make?
In the portrait "Legacy in Focus", the creative choices emphasize a portrait that celebrates the enduring spirit of a rural elder whose weathered face reflects a lifetime of experience, resilience, and wisdom. By holding a camera, the subject transcends the role of a mere subject to become a storyteller, preserving memories and connecting generations through the power of imagery. Set against the simplicity of the countryside, the photograph highlights the timeless relationship between people, culture, and the stories that deserve to be remembered.
What techniques did you use to achieve that composition or lighting in your work?
To achieve this composition and lighting style, I primarily used low-key lighting with a single directional light source to create strong contrast and dramatic shadows. Instead of evenly lighting the entire subject, I allowed parts of the frame to remain in darkness, which added depth, mystery, and emotional intensity to the portraits. For composition, I focused on subject placement, negative space, and visual balance. I often positioned the subject slightly off-center and used surrounding darkness or background textures to naturally guide the viewer’s eye toward the illuminated areas. In several portraits, I also used side profiles and diagonal body positioning to create a cinematic flow within the frame. I relied heavily on controlled highlights to emphasize facial expressions, textures, jewelry, fabric details, and mood. Warm tones and monochrome treatments were intentionally chosen to enhance atmosphere and storytelling. In some images, practical light sources like flames were used to create natural glow, reflections, and organic shadows that added authenticity to the scene. Overall, the technique combines cinematic portrait lighting, minimal light control, intentional shadow use, and storytelling-based composition to create emotionally engaging imagery.
What was your editing process for a typical street photograph?
My editing process focused on enhancing mood, contrast, and storytelling. I adjusted highlights and shadows to create a dramatic low-key effect, refined the color tones for a cinematic look, and used selective sharpening to emphasize important details like facial features, textures, and lighting. I also reduced distractions in the background to keep the viewer’s attention on the subject and overall atmosphere.
Why do these candid moments resonate with you?
These candid moments resonate with me because they capture genuine human emotion without any staging or performance. The innocence in the children’s expressions, their curiosity, joy, and natural interactions create a powerful emotional connection. I’m drawn to these moments because they reflect real life in its purest form — simple, honest, and emotionally timeless. The black-and-white treatment further removes distractions and allows the emotions, expressions, and storytelling to become the true focus of the image.
