Stripping It Back to Light and Shadow: Black & White Photography Awards 2026

Stripping It Back to Light and Shadow: Black & White Photography Awards 2026

Pre-Launch Announcement

An upcoming celebration of India's monochrome photographers

WallMag is preparing to unveil the WallMag Black & White Photography Awards 2026, an upcoming national recognition built for the photographers who choose, deliberately, to work without colour. This is an early word, not a launch. We want the creators who care most about the discipline of monochrome to have the runway to revisit their archives, refine their selections, and arrive at submissions with their strongest body of work.

WallMag Creator Magazine has always been community-first. Our awards exist to put creators in the same room as the recognition, the readership, and the partner ecosystems they have already earned through long, careful seasons of work. The Black & White Photography Awards 2026 will continue that tradition, lifting the photographers who treat shadow, contrast, and grain as a language of their own into the conversation they deserve.

About the award

The WallMag Black & White Photography Awards 2026 celebrate India's most disciplined monochrome photographers, those who turn light, shadow, and texture into pure emotional language. The award invites work across street, portrait, landscape, abstract, and documentary photography, frames that earn their colourlessness with composition, contrast, and intent.

Entries will be evaluated through a curated industry jury working alongside an open community vote, recognising both technical mastery and emotional weight. Black and white is the most honest of photographic conventions and the most demanding. Without colour to lean on, every choice in framing, exposure, and tonal range becomes audible. That is exactly what this edition has been built to celebrate. Selected creators will earn national visibility, partner brand collaboration opportunities, and a place in WallMag's monochrome legacy.

Light, Shadow, and Soul in Monochrome. That is the spirit we want this edition to carry.

Who it's for

If a black-and-white frame has ever felt to you like the only honest version of an image, this award has been built with you in mind. We are thinking specifically of:

  • Photographers who work primarily in monochrome
  • Street and documentary creators with a B&W eye
  • Fine-art and gallery photographers in black and white
  • Analogue, film, and traditional darkroom practitioners

There are no genre or experience restrictions inside black and white photography. Some of the most quietly important work in the country is being made by photographers who never publish in colour, who develop their own film, and who treat their archives like long-form essays. That depth of practice is exactly what we want to honour here.

What we're excited to see

Up to five projects per creator will be welcome, each one a complete piece or a coherent set telling a single story. We are especially excited to see monochrome work across street, portrait, landscape, abstract, and documentary photography, frames that earn their lack of colour through light and intent.

To keep the bar high and the playing field level, three principles guide every submission:

  • Authentic ownership: Each submission must be created and fully owned by the creator.
  • Maximum scope: Up to 5 unique projects may be shared.
  • Integrity first: Any plagiarism, copied work, stock content, or AI-generated content results in immediate disqualification.

Each entry can carry a short note from the creator. A line on what pulled you towards monochrome for this particular subject, or what you wanted the absence of colour to do, can take a frame much further than another caption ever could.

Prizes and recognition: an early preview

The recognition stack for this edition rests on three pillars: meaningful platform value, editorial visibility, and partner-led collaboration with the camera, lens, print, and analogue partners shaping the country's monochrome ecosystem. Final details will be confirmed at launch, but here is what creators can expect.

Start preparing

The work begins now. Pull the negatives. Open the older folders. Look at the frames you converted to black and white years ago and never quite published, the ones that did not fit a feed but never lost their pull. Re-process them with the eye you have today. Sit with the contact sheets. Decide which five pieces speak most clearly to who you are as a monochrome photographer in 2026, and let that be the work you bring forward.

Black and white photography in India has a long, serious lineage, and we are excited to see how this generation extends it when submissions open in May.
