Country Music Through My Lens: An Interview with Neil Umwi

How did your journey in music begin?

Going to church was a huge part of life growing up in Shillong. We were always surrounded by music everywhere we went, and that's how my musical journey started. I would sing and play in church, with the worship team or the choir. Outside of church, I would listen to various genres of music, from rock and metal to folk and pop. However, it was the storytelling aspect of country music that truly connected me with the genre; songs that tell stories about life, love, heartbreak and the simple things that we go through every single day. I have performed at various events, gatherings, festivals, competitions, or any place where music was required. I started writing my own songs because I felt it was the best way to express my thoughts and emotions, whether they were inspired by my own imagination or by real life experiences. With a couple of singles out, I am working on new music, aiming to ensure that each song resonates deeply and holds significance for its listeners.

What was the first song you ever wrote or performed, and how did it feel?

The first original song I ever performed is an unreleased song called "Let's Get Lost." It felt really good singing an original because all I was used to was covers. It was a bit nerve-wracking, but the audience was clapping to the beat of the song, and I had a good time playing it as well.

How has your experience as a singer-songwriter grown over the years?

I've been writing songs for around 10-12 years, and there has been a lot of improvement as the years went by. The biggest improvement is finding my voice rather than copying one of my heroes. I do struggle with writer's block sometimes, but it's a little easier to find a way past that. I think because of the improvement in my guitar playing, I have a better understanding of melody and also the choice of words that I use rather than using the same words over and over again.

What country music artists or songs have influenced your style the most?

George Strait, Alan Jackson, Brad Paisley, Blake Shelton, Kenny Chesney, Florida Georgia Line, Luke Combs, Morgan Wallen, Brett Young, Brett Eldredge, and many more have all shaped my sound. Each of these artists brings something unique to the table, from storytelling to vocal delivery, and I've learned a lot by studying their work.

What's the story behind the original song you shared?

"Burnin' This Summer" is all about being around someone you like and just having the best summer together. It's a fun, feel-good song about making memories, staying out late, and enjoying every moment while it lasts. I wanted to capture that carefree, joyful energy that comes with summer romance.

Why is that instrument or gear special to you?

My acoustic guitar, an Epiphone Masterbilt AJ-45ME, is incredibly special to me. This guitar sounds so good both plugged and unplugged, and I mainly write my songs playing this guitar, so it is one of those things that I care about the most. It's become an extension of my creative process.

Why did you choose that cover song to perform?

It's a fun song to sing because of the up-tempo, fast-talking "western cattle auctioneer" type of singing and great lyrics. It is also a challenging song because there are a few things that need to be precise: timing the breaths, getting the lyrics right, and enunciating the words properly. I love a good challenge, and this one really pushes my vocal skills.

What inspired the lyrics you shared in the upload?

The lyrics of the song "That's Where I Come From" were inspired by my home and my hometown. I'd been away from home for a couple of years, and I kind of missed home a little too much one night. Sleep just wouldn't come, so I ended up writing this song that night, and it's one of my favorite songs that I've ever written. It's a deeply personal piece that reflects my roots.

How does that visual style reflect your music and personality?

Simple and honest. The cowboy look adds a bit to the aesthetics, but just like the songs that I write and sing, I try my best to keep it simple, keep it honest, and just be me. My visual style is a direct reflection of my music—authentic and unpretentious.
