Do you remember the very first song you ever sang out loud, and where you were when it happened?
My first video song is "Ye hawa chali chali," recorded at Priya Studio, Mumbai. That was the moment I first sang out loud on camera, and it holds a special place in my heart as the starting point of my journey.
When was the first moment you heard your own voice and thought, "this is something I can really do"?
When I was 17 years old, studying in class 11th science, I first sang a few lines from the film Ashqie and realized that I could really do singing. Today, a total of ten years have been spent in Bollywood doing singing, and overall I have 16 years of experience in singing. I am a great fan of Kishore da.
Is there a guru, teacher, or singer whose voice shaped yours — someone you'd want to name and thank here?
Yes, my voice texture goes between Kishore Kumar ji and Kumar Sanu ji. Obviously, my Guru is Kishore Kumar ji, and I listen to his songs daily and sing them as well. A lot of thanks to Guru ji Kishore Kumar ji.
How did your path lead you toward playback singing in Mumbai — what was the door that first opened for you?
Music director S.P. Sen ji at Priya Studio, Mumbai gave me the first chance to do playback singing for his Hindi film. The duet song is "Tip tip gire varish to jal utha ye man," and the song was composed by S.P. Sen ji. That opportunity opened the door for me in Mumbai.
What's the story behind this recording — what is the song, and why does it mean the most to you?
The music composition of this song is given by Rudrashish Dutta ji, the song is written by Azeem Shirazi, and it is sung by me, Singer Pushpinder Singh, at Studio World, Kolkata. The lyrics of the song are "Jheel se tere aankho me..." The composition touches the heart of the public and friends as it's about appreciation for the features of a beautiful girl. The instrumental music is superb and very well copes with the composition. Its video is flashing on YouTube and liked by maximum people.
What was happening in this moment, and how did the room feel that night?
It was my wife's sister's marriage, and there I sang the Kishore da song "Aao mere paas aur aao, na ghabrao, na sharmao." It was a musical night and I fully enjoyed it.
What were you recording that day, and what do you remember most about your hours behind the mic?
Among various best recordings in Mumbai and Kolkata, every time inside the studio and behind the mic, I first memorize the composition through written lyrics and plan mainly to put the best song expressions as per the situation of the song. The flow of voice and singing must be accurate so the song will be complete with a practical sense of its situations. Singing through the heart is itself self-explanatory when my eyes are partially closed and I am feeling deep in the step-by-step composition, its expressions, lyrical words, and finally enjoying every song recording. Among all recordings, the recording of "Jheel se aankho me tere..." is my best recording at Studio World, Kolkata.
What is it about this track that keeps pulling you back to it?
The song "Jheel se aankho me tere" is composed by Rudrashish Dutta ji, who believes in R.D. Burman style, and this song is similar to the same style, whose wording and composition touch the heart of everyone. The song was liked by maximum people and mainly appreciated by Bollywood. One more recording of mine, the national song "Bhartiya Sena," is appreciated by the Ministry, Government of India. It's about our Bhartiya Sena, and I sang it at Studio Priya, Mumbai, under composition by S.P. Sen ji. So the best compositions and lyrics definitely touch us and are liked by all.
What's the story behind this moment for you?
Music is my hobby, and I daily listen to Kishore Kumar songs, which actually satisfy me in learning, grasping tips, and expressions. When I am in studios behind the mic, I always try to put expressions as per the situation of the songs. My Guru Kishore da was a master of expressions. I just love expressive songs. So here Guru's formula is more working, and I believe gaining expressions in life is not a job or study or timely work but it is whatever passing expressions during conversations with different people, practically gained through nature, good habits, etc. — means all positivity. Definitely sargam is very important and sharp singing, but without expressive original nature and its positivity, no one becomes a good singer or especially a playback singer in life because real singing is full of real expressions which originate through original singers having a huge positive attitude. This means huge positivity easily helps to get sargam knowledge and enters anybody's soul to develop more positive nature and desire towards singing. So sargam needs natural expressions during singing, which actually comes through original positive nature. That's the reason only a few are expressive masters in singing. Expressions are not a learning process, but anybody gains them through responsibilities, sincerity, working ability, good behaviour, real friendship based on nature of help, care, respect, and good advice. The totality of these positives actually enters our soul from the beginning, and one day these expressions easily come out for singing any new lyrics. Hence, the more the positivity, the more the real expressive music comes out during singing.
What are you building toward with this, and when do we get to hear it?
Actually, I am a writer also and trying to write stories and essays for different topics. A Hindi film story, "Anokha Pyar-Ek Sacchi Dosti," written by me is under discussion with a producer of Bollywood. There are maximum six songs in this film, and hopefully its recordings will be soon after the decision of the producer. So all is still under suspense and planning, but hopefully recordings will go soon or depend on the producer's decision.
If there's one song, one stage, or one moment you're still dreaming of singing, what does it look like?
Music is my hobby, so definitely chances to sing anywhere are the best options to me, and I will either sing my songs or Kishore Kumar ji songs. When we work professionally on a desired hobby, it gives us happiness, satisfaction, and one more step towards success. It looks like my love towards singing.
