The Voice of Silence: An Interview with Roma Mitra

The Voice of Silence: An Interview with Roma Mitra

How did you first get into music and voice acting?

From my childhood days, when I was just a toddler, I used to sing, and everyone around me would listen and inspire me to sing. One thing they all had in common was that they loved my voice.

What was a pivotal moment that made you pursue this creative path?

When I got attention singing in school functions and celebrations, that kind of adulation mattered. Wherever I went, I had to sing at others' request.

How has your creative process evolved since you started?

Starting from being only a singer, I now produce my songs and also experiment with my team. I have produced 'TOR SAATHE', a Bengali song, which is now showcased on the Times Music channel. You can listen to it here: https://youtu.be/R3iFhmzf4Zc?si=h3zV_2OukVv3KVAm

What do you enjoy most about combining writing and voice acting?

What I enjoy most about writing and voice acting is the opportunity to bring ideas and emotions to life. Writing allows me to create worlds, explore profound themes, and express thoughts that can resonate with people on a deeper level. Voice acting, on the other hand, gives those words a soul. Through voice, I can convey emotions, personality, and nuance in a way that connects directly with the audience.

For me, the two complement each other beautifully. Writing creates the vision, while voice acting breathes life into it. Both are forms of storytelling, and there's nothing more rewarding than knowing that a story or a performance has made someone think, feel, or see the world from a different perspective.

It's about the Primordial Sound of this universe which heals and loves.

That's me, solely standing with me, the wound and the healing, both created by me. It's not my quote. My voice and my pics.

How does your workspace influence your creativity?

My workspace gives me something I value above all else—silence. I believe silence is the mother of all creativity. It's in those quiet moments, free from distraction and noise, that ideas begin to take shape. Silence allows me to reflect, imagine, and connect more deeply with my thoughts and emotions. For me, creativity doesn't emerge from chaos; it grows from stillness.

What excites you most about your current project?

What excites me most about this project is its unique fusion of two powerful forces—Mahakaal and Nemesis. To me, Mahakaal represents the timeless, unstoppable force that transcends creation and destruction, while Nemesis embodies justice, consequence, and the inevitable balance that follows every action. Bringing these two ideas together creates something that feels both epic and deeply meaningful.

I'm drawn to projects that are not just entertaining but also carry layers of symbolism. This one has the potential to explore themes of destiny, power, redemption, and the price of human choices. That depth makes the creative process incredibly rewarding.

As an artist, I enjoy working on projects that evoke emotion and provoke thought. The combination of mythological grandeur and psychological intensity offers immense scope for artistic expression, and being part of such a vision is genuinely inspiring. I'm excited to contribute to a story that feels bold, timeless, and capable of leaving a lasting impression on its audience.

What was the mood like during that recording session?

If I had to describe my mood during that recording session, I'd say it was a blend of calmness, introspection, and quiet emotional intensity. I wasn't trying to impress anyone or chase perfection. I simply wanted to surrender to the song and let it speak through me.

Before I began recording, I spent a few moments absorbing the lyrics and the emotion behind them. Once the music started, I stopped thinking about technique or whether every note was flawless. Instead, I focused on telling the story. I believe that when you stop singing at the audience and start singing from your heart, the performance becomes much more authentic.

There was also a sense of peace. Recording is one of the few moments when the outside world fades away for me. The worries, the noise, and the distractions disappear, and all that remains is the connection between my voice and the music. It's almost meditative.

At the same time, there was vulnerability. Every recording captures a part of who you are in that moment, and that's both beautiful and intimidating. I wanted the emotions to feel genuine rather than manufactured. If listeners connect with the song, I hope it's because they hear honesty in the voice.

By the end of the session, I felt deeply satisfied—not because I believed I had created a perfect recording, but because I had expressed something real. For me, that's always more meaningful than technical perfection. Music is ultimately about communication, and if even one person feels understood or moved by what they hear, then the recording has achieved its purpose.

If you read it, the explanation is in the poetry.

Describe the character or story behind this visual.

The protagonist embodies Time as Nemesis—an eternal force that transcends human existence. The character is a unique fusion of Mahakaal, the timeless cosmic power in Hindu philosophy, and Nemesis, the Greek goddess who represents divine justice and the inevitable consequences of one's actions. He is neither a conventional hero nor a villain, but an impartial force that watches over the moral balance of the universe. Through this powerful blend of Eastern spirituality and Greek philosophy, the character symbolizes that time ultimately becomes the judge of every deed, ensuring that every action is met with its rightful consequence.
