Through the Lens of a Mobile: An Interview with Ajitesh Ragavendra

How did your journey in mobile photography begin?

My journey started as a passion. I was always fascinated by the idea of capturing moments, and my phone became the perfect tool to explore that interest. It began with simple shots, but soon I realized how much potential there was in mobile photography.

What was the first moment when you realized your phone could capture something truly special?

It happened when I was in a valley and managed to capture a water droplet. That moment made me see that even the smallest details could be transformed into something beautiful through the lens of my phone.

How has your experience with mobile photography grown over the years?

It's been less than a year since I started taking it seriously, but my interest has grown immensely. I've learned to see the world differently, paying attention to light, composition, and timing. Every day brings a new lesson, and I'm constantly experimenting to improve my craft.

What type of subjects do you most enjoy photographing with your mobile device?

I'm drawn to forests, temples, and mountains. There's something magical about capturing the serenity of nature and the intricate details of ancient architecture. These subjects allow me to tell stories through my images.

The efforts make it special, along with the lighting. Each photo represents a moment of patience and observation, and the way light interacts with the subject is what truly brings it to life.

I used Adobe Lightroom to adjust the lighting. My goal was to enhance the natural tones without overdoing it, keeping the image true to the scene while adding a bit of drama.

What app or tool do you primarily use for editing your mobile photos?

I primarily use Adobe Lightroom. It offers a great balance of control and simplicity, allowing me to fine-tune exposure, colors, and details right on my phone.

How did you handle the lighting challenge in that shot?

I located with my camera — meaning I positioned myself and adjusted the angle to make the most of the available light. Sometimes it's about moving a few steps to find the perfect spot where the light falls just right.

Describe the composition and emotions you aimed to convey in that portrait or street photo.

Be awake all the time. I wanted to capture a sense of alertness and presence, as if the subject is fully engaged with their surroundings. The composition focuses on the eyes and the subtle expressions that tell a story.

What's your process for using creative techniques like long exposure or macro?

I used long exposures and macro techniques, depending on my location and perspective. Long exposure helps create a sense of motion and time, while macro allows me to capture intricate details that often go unnoticed. I choose the technique based on what story I want the photo to tell.
