How did your journey in creativity begin, and what motivated you to pursue a lifetime of achievement in your field?
My journey unfolded gradually, shaped by the challenges that came my way as I grew older. Throughout my life, I followed the teachings of my well-wishers, which guided me through every step. Their wisdom became the foundation of my path, and I embraced each lesson with dedication.
What was the first significant milestone in your career that made you realize you had a unique talent?
At the age of five, my elder brother enrolled me in the Scouts. The song we sang there completely transformed my lifestyle: 'Daya kar dan bhakti ka hame paramatma dena, daya karana hamari atma ko shuddhata dena, hamara dharm ho seva hamara karm ho seva... hame sevak bana dena, kisi ke vaste jina kisi ke vaste marna... ye karm ho mera.' That experience led to my first award in March, which encouraged me to strive for more, no matter the challenges ahead.
How has your experience and creative process evolved over the years?
I believe that every challenge is an opportunity to learn and grow. Over the years, I've learned to approach problems with patience and perseverance, always seeking knowledge and perfection in whatever I do. This mindset has helped me evolve continuously.
What personal philosophy drives you to keep creating and achieving?
Doing any type of work—whether it's study, play, helping others, or professional tasks—with true knowledge, hard work, and perfection always keeps you motivated and ahead of others. That philosophy has been my driving force.
What work best represents your lifetime achievement in your creative field?
The work that best represents my lifetime achievement spans several fields:
- Urban Reclamation & Infrastructure Development: Reclaimed and developed BKC, transforming toxic mangroves and slums into a thriving commercial hub, including sewer lines, drainage systems, sound barriers, and water supply facilities.
- Sustainable Development: Addressed environmental concerns by revitalizing the Mithi River through treatment and rechannelization to benefit local residents.
- Community Support: Devoted earnings post-retirement to orphanages and NGOs for disabled children, mentoring and encouraging them through singing and stage performances.
- Legacy Projects: Laid the foundation for Mumbai Metro and neighboring urban developments, integrating futuristic planning to sustain Mumbai’s growing population and infrastructure needs.
- Childhood Advocacy: Provided educational opportunities and assistance to underprivileged or orphan children, reflecting my own struggle of studying under streetlights and seeking support.
- Innovative Engineering Education: Assisted young engineers in design and planning, sharing decades of expertise to promote advanced urban development.
Briefly describe the work you uploaded and explain why it is significant to your journey.
I achieved success in many fields—singing, NCC, Scouts, sports, paintings, and social work. But my most significant contribution has been the development of the Bandra Kurla commercial hub in Mumbai, from its inception, to ease congestion and create jobs while improving the marshy creek environment. This work, spanning over 36 years, was challenging but gave me the name of a servant of the nation. For this lifetime achievement, I was nominated for the Padma Award and received the Bharat Vibhushan award from the Government of Punjab at the Punjab Vidhan Sabha in Chandigarh. I still want to do more for the nation, as that gives me satisfaction and motivation till the end of my life.

What challenges did you face while creating that work and how did you overcome them?
Without hurdles, you cannot achieve anything. To overcome them, hard work is essential. I came from a very poor family—no light at home, no proper clothes, no daily food. I studied under streetlights, worked to get my books, and supported my family. In my early life, I did many types of work: helper, jamal, wood cutter, preparing cycles, selling flowers and fruits on the street, doing healing work for the needy, and working on dam construction. But self-confidence helped me overcome all hurdles and gave me lifelong work satisfaction.

The confidence to do work successfully was taught to me by my parents, gurus, and well-wishers. Without their help and teachings, I would not be where I am today. My faith in God and the blessings of my parents, teachers, friends, relatives, brothers, and sisters motivated me for my lifetime achievements.

How did this work change your perspective or direction?
Working in the field and successfully completing the designed work gave me the confidence to achieve the final result: developing marshy creek land with proper study and knowledge to create a commercial hub in Mumbai. That generated a huge amount after selling the land, which is now used for the development of Mumbai city with necessary infrastructure such as transport, mono metro rail, and helping municipal corporations develop road networks, water supply, and other essential requirements of a growing city.
