Meet Jonah Gurung: The 1st Winner of WallMag Wedding Photography Awards 2020

jonah gurung

WallMag: How did you get started with photography, and when you decide that you want to pursue wedding photography as your career?

jonah-gurung

I have been passionate about photography since the early years of my life. I used to be fascinated with cameras and the process of taking pictures when I was a kid, which continued to fascinate me as an adult. Eventually, I got my hands on my first camera ever, and that was the genesis of my photography career.

WallMag: How long have you been shooting weddings? How many weddings have you photographed?

jonah-gurung

I have been doing wedding photography for the past seven years now, and so far, I have captured about 500+ weddings of various cultures, people, and places.

WallMag: What was your turning point in your career?

jonah-gurung

The turning point in my career would be that particular moment when I was confident enough to pursue and embrace my passion fully. There's no turning back ever since.

WallMag: Can you share your achievements in life regarding photography?

jonah gurung

My achievements in photography include:

Dream Award 2019

Wedding Photography of the year winner 2019

Best bride-groom portrait winner 2019

Best getting ready portrait winner 2019

WallMag: Can you please share one "Happiest Moment in your Photography life"?

jonah gurung

I don't remember one particular happy moment because there are many, but yes, I feel extremely grateful when I think about the immense love and support I receive from people and my clients.

WallMag: What are your services offered, and where one can order your services?

jonnah gurung

Photography and Cinematography are the major services we offer, but you can have a more detailed look into it via our website.

WallMag: How would you define your photography style?

jonah gurung

My style of photography, I would say, is mainly focused on storytelling, capturing wedding emotions in its raw form yet presenting it in a glamorous fashion.

WallMag: Tell us through your photography process. How do you complete your work from start to finish?

jnah gurung

You will always find me working with my team on new ideas, concepts, creating timelines of all different weddings, and a lot of pre-production work. We speak to our clients beforehand and plan on the theme of the wedding, we shoot the wedding on the discussed theme then process and retouch work follows, we make an album and deliver to the clients along with a lot of personal attention.

WallMag: There is a special candid moment, top-notch compositions in your photographs. Few words about that?

jonah gurung

One of the key things about the compositions in my photographs is being patient yet fiesty alert to be able to predict moments within a shoot that will allow me to take that picture. This can only be done by challenging oneself. I always challenge myself to do better and not repeat what I have already done. I carry this thought at the back of my head all the time.

A relationship that started from the womb of a mother has to evolve, and the exact moment of transition when a man comes and takes the daughter from her mother is paradoxically beautiful. In this photo, the characters are placed exactly in such a way to depict this very notion. The mother on the far end window outside the car, The man in the middle, and the daughter on the other end of the car.

WallMag: Can you share your most challenging shoot?

jonah gurung

Each wedding is challenging actually. I find church weddings to be more challenging because we don't get to move around and add lighting much. There will be a limited time where you have to shoot bridal makeup, portraits, and church ceremonies...so each shot demands a lot more accuracy.

WallMag: What has been your favorite photo location?

jonah gurung

It is defitintely Darjeeling.

Darjeeling has a rich history and is world-renowned for its beauty, tea, and Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage site. I have clicked some exceptionally beautiful pictures here and I feel proud to belong to this part of the world yet what makes Darjeeling more beautiful to me is the details, the minute ones, and the overall environment that engulfs Darjeeling.

WallMag: What's the most memorable wedding you've shot?

jonah gurung

The one I captured in Shillong, Meghalaya. It was a new place, new people, new culture, and totally a new experience for me. It got me into thinking how different we all are so different yet so similar when it comes to celebrating people and relationships.

WallMag: What is typically in your camera bag while you shoot a wedding. Please share the image of your photography gear and one image of your photography team.

I capture weddings with my Sony full-frame camera and sigma lens with godox High sync Lights.

WallMag: As a photographer, how far do you think participating in awards/contests is important for a photography career?

jonnah gurung

I think it is a good way to learn more. Awards/contests help us to be motivated by all different people sharing a similar passion and also helps us to be aware of other people like us. It encourages us to know more about our tribe i.e. The Photographers Tribe.

WallMag: What would you say to the newbie photographers who want to build a career in wedding photography in one line?

jonah-gurung

There's no substitute for hard work and no end to learning.

WallMag: When you shoot an engagement/wedding, what are your goals? Of course, pleasing the bride and groom must surely be high on the list of priorities, but I'd be interested to know what drives you to shoot weddings, stay creative and keep being passionate about it.

jonah-gurung

I open my eyes for minute moments and unnoticed stories that are taking place all around. When I can capture that I am able to please my clients, but I also focus on creating a production design for the entire shoot. I make sure to find new perspectives on the stories that I tell.

WallMag: What lies ahead for you? What is your next goal in photography?

jonah-gurung

I want to contribute to the growth of wedding photography to another level. I have my set of plans and surely be working on them.
