Melodies of the Heart: An Interview with Singer-Songwriter Dhiman Das

What inspired you to start your journey in music as a singer, songwriter, and producer?

Music has always been my passion—it's in my blood. For me, it's like food; I cannot go a single day without it. From a young age, I felt an undeniable pull toward creating and expressing myself through melodies and words. It's not just a hobby or a career; it's an essential part of who I am. Every note and lyric feels like a natural extension of my being, and that's what drives me to keep exploring and growing as an artist.

When was the first time you felt a strong connection to a song you wrote or performed?

There have been many instances where I've felt deeply connected to my work, but it really depends on my mood and the feelings I want to express at that moment. Some songs I've written resonate with me on a profound level because they capture exactly what I was going through. For example, there's a particular song I wrote during a period of introspection—it felt like the words poured out of me, and every time I perform it, I relive that emotional journey. That connection is what makes music so powerful for me.

How has your experience as a lyricist grown since you began, and what themes do you explore now?

I started out writing poems, and gradually, that inspired me to venture into songwriting. Over time, my style has evolved, and I now explore a wide range of themes and expressions. Mostly, I focus on human connections and relationships—the bonds we share, the joys and sorrows that come with them. I also touch on social issues and the society we live in, because I believe music can be a mirror to our world. Each song is a new opportunity to delve deeper into these subjects and connect with listeners on a meaningful level.

What is the most memorable performance or recording session you've had, and why?

In terms of performance, I would recall my higher secondary school's talent show—that was the most special performance of my life. All my friends cheered for me that day, and the energy in the room was electric. Even the rehearsal days leading up to it are among my fondest memories. As for recording, my debut session and the songs I recorded right after were incredibly memorable. I learned so much during those days—I once recorded three songs back to back in a single day! Working with all those noted professionals was a great experience that shaped my approach to music production.

Tell us about the song you've written and produced yourself—what's the story behind it?

This song is an English version of a popular Assamese song, "Maya Mathu Maya," by the legendary artiste, the late Zubeen Garg. I had informed him about this project earlier when he was alive, and I was supposed to release it through him. Unfortunately, that couldn't happen. This song holds a special place in my heart because it's the first song I ever wrote and produced officially. It's a tribute to his legacy and a reflection of my own journey as a songwriter.

What does your workspace say about your creative process?

My workspace is a space to be unique and creative—a stage for showtime. It's where I express what I want to share with the world. Every corner is designed to inspire me, from the instruments I keep close to the ambient lighting that sets the mood. It's not just a room; it's a sanctuary where ideas come to life. When I step in, I feel a shift in energy, and that's when the magic happens.

What aspect of your performance in that video are you most proud of?

This was "Illusion's" first live performance, and I'm incredibly proud of how it turned out. The energy, the connection with the audience, and the way the band came together—it was a milestone for me. Seeing the song come alive on stage, with all its nuances, was a dream come true. It validated all the hard work we put into rehearsals and gave me confidence in my live performance skills.

In this clip, you can hear the raw vocal take versus the final mixed version. I focused on layering harmonies, adding reverb to create depth, and compressing the vocals to ensure clarity. The goal was to make the emotion of the song shine through while maintaining a polished sound. It's amazing how much difference mixing can make—it transforms a simple recording into a full-bodied experience.

What direction do you envision for this new piece you're working on?

I am currently working on multiple projects, including some Hindi songs and new Assamese tracks. I've also written new songs and am in the process of tuning them. I have big plans lined up, and I'm excited to explore different genres and collaborations. Each project is a step toward refining my sound and reaching a wider audience. I want my music to resonate with people from all walks of life, and I'm committed to pushing creative boundaries.
