Street Stories: An Interview with Dr. Anupam Sen Choudhury

Street Stories: An Interview with Dr. Anupam Sen Choudhury

How did your journey in street photography begin?

Sixteen years ago, I started with a modest point-and-shoot digital camera that was meant to be nothing more than a travel companion. However, as I began capturing the world around me, I discovered a natural intuition for light and composition that turned a simple hobby into a lifelong passion.

What was the first moment you knew you wanted to pursue photography seriously?

The turning point came when my work was first published in The Asian Photography and Imaging magazine. Seeing my name in print for the very first time brought a deep sense of validation and satisfaction—and from that moment on, I began treating photography not just as a passion, but as a serious art to express my thoughts, emotions, and perspectives.

How has your style and perspective evolved over the years?

Like most beginners, I started by photographing everything in sight. Over time, however, my focus shifted from simply taking pictures to actively hunting for stories within the frame. I began pausing before pushing the shutter, asking myself, 'Why am I capturing this exact moment?' Photography was no longer just about snapping a scene; it had to convey a story or embody a meaningful composition. This realization naturally drew me to street photography, a genre where every passing second holds an untold narrative waiting to unfold.

What drives you to continue capturing street moments?

What drives me back to the streets time and again is the thrill of starting with a blank canvas. Street photography thrives on pure unpredictability—the spontaneous burst of candid emotion, the clever juxtapositions hiding in plain sight, and the interplay of structural patterns of the city and its heritage. Every time I step outside, I'm met with a fresh challenge: to find and frame a completely new story out of the chaos.

The photographs presented here are a collection of observations from the streets. Some were taken to highlight quiet, unfolding stories—fleeting everyday narratives that surround us, yet so often go unnoticed or overlooked. Others were captured to seize 'The Decisive Moment': split-second events that appear and dissolve in the blink of an eye, where the true challenge lies in pressing the shutter at precisely the right instant. Finally, a few frames celebrate the unique design, capturing the timeless heritage, striking geometry, and subtle patterns that form the backdrop of urban life.

A man sits at a roadside eatery, enjoying a quiet meal. Behind him, a piece of graffiti depicts a figure with a sad, hungry expression, positioned so precisely that it appears to watch the diner. The scene carries a subtle, poignant satire—a visual irony reflecting the millions around the world who quietly endure hunger, unable to afford the simple dignity of a warm meal.

Upload a photo where lighting or shadows play a key role and explain how you used them.

For this frame, I utilized strong backlighting to transform my subjects into striking silhouettes. Stripping away fine detail allowed the composition to focus purely on shape, contrast, and atmosphere.

Share a photo of a person or scene that tells a strong story and describe the narrative behind it.

Etched directly into the clay of her family's mud home, a little girl carefully practices her Bengali letters. This raw, unfiltered moment captures far more than basic handwriting; it embodies a fierce hunger for knowledge and serves as a poignant reminder of why educating and empowering young girls matters so deeply.

Upload a photo taken in a location you frequently shoot and explain why you keep returning there.

This location gives different moods and vibes in different seasons and at different times of the day. There is so much going on here at any given moment.

Upload a black-and-white street photograph and tell us what black-and-white adds to that image.

The choice of monochrome lends this frame an enduring, nostalgic quality. By converting the scene to black and white, the architectural history and heritage of the place take center stage, given a weight and prominence that color may fail to convey.
