Strings of Passion: An Interview with Musician Biki Biswas

Strings of Passion: An Interview with Musician Biki Biswas

How did your journey with guitar, ukulele, bass, and mandolin begin?

My musical journey began with a deep passion for string instruments and a curiosity to explore the emotions they can express. What started as a personal interest in the guitar gradually evolved into a broader exploration of instruments such as the ukulele, bass guitar, and mandolin. Each instrument introduced me to unique techniques, sounds, and musical perspectives, helping me develop a versatile understanding of music. Over the years, I dedicated myself to continuous learning, practice, and performance. Through this journey, I realized that music is not only an art form but also a powerful medium for personal growth, creativity, and community building. This realization inspired me to share my knowledge and experience with aspiring musicians. Today, as the Founder of Guitar Vibes Academy, my mission is to make quality music education accessible to learners of all ages. My journey with these instruments has shaped both my professional career and my vision of empowering individuals through music, creativity, and lifelong learning.

What was the first song you ever learned to play on any of these instruments?

The first song I learned to play was "DDLJ" on the guitar. It holds a special place in my heart because it marked the beginning of my ability to translate melodies into music. That experience ignited my passion for playing and set me on a path of continuous exploration and growth.

How has your playing style evolved over the years?

My playing style has evolved significantly over the years through continuous learning, experimentation, and practical experience. In the beginning, my focus was primarily on mastering technical skills and understanding the fundamentals of various string instruments. As I gained confidence, I started exploring different musical genres, techniques, and performance styles, which helped me develop a more versatile and expressive approach to playing. Over time, I learned that great musicianship is not only about technical proficiency but also about conveying emotion and connecting with listeners. This realization encouraged me to focus on musical expression, creativity, and storytelling through my performances. My experience with guitar, ukulele, bass, and mandolin has allowed me to blend different influences and create a style that is both dynamic and adaptable. Today, my playing reflects a balance between technical discipline and artistic expression. As an educator and Founder of Guitar Vibes Academy, I also strive to inspire students to develop their own unique musical voices rather than simply imitate others. I believe that true growth as a musician comes from embracing continuous learning while staying authentic to one's artistic identity.

Which instrument do you feel most connected to and why?

Among all the instruments I play, the guitar is the one I feel most deeply connected to. It was the instrument that first sparked my passion for music and became the foundation of my musical journey. The guitar offers incredible versatility, allowing me to express a wide range of emotions, styles, and creative ideas, whether through solo performances, accompaniment, composition, or teaching. What makes the guitar especially meaningful to me is its ability to connect people. Through this instrument, I have not only developed as a musician but also had the opportunity to inspire and mentor aspiring artists. It has played a central role in shaping my career and ultimately led to the establishment of Guitar Vibes Academy, where I work to make music education more accessible and engaging for learners of all ages. While I enjoy playing ukulele, bass, and mandolin, the guitar remains my strongest creative voice. It continues to challenge me, inspire me, and remind me of why I began this journey in the first place—to share the power of music and create meaningful connections through art.

What piece did you choose for your video performance and why does it resonate with you?

In the video I performed "Tere Liye," a timeless and emotionally powerful melody that beautifully expresses love, devotion, and deep human connection. I chose this piece because of its ability to evoke strong emotions and resonate with listeners across generations. For this performance, I adapted the song into a guitar instrumental arrangement, focusing on capturing the essence of the original composition while adding my own musical expression. My goal was to allow the melody to speak through the instrument, highlighting its emotional depth and creating a reflective listening experience. What makes "Tere Liye" special to me is its simplicity and sincerity. Through this rendition, I wanted to demonstrate how instrumental music can communicate feelings beyond words and create a meaningful connection between the performer and the audience. It is a piece that reminds us of the universal language of music and its power to touch hearts.

What makes your favorite instrument in your collection so special to you?

Reels and Frames

The electric guitar is special to me because it represents both creativity and limitless musical expression. Its versatility allows me to explore a wide range of genres, tones, and emotions, making it an instrument that continually inspires me to grow as a musician. Whether performing melodic instrumentals, experimenting with new sounds, or connecting with an audience, the electric guitar provides a unique platform for artistic expression. What I appreciate most is its ability to transform a simple melody into something powerful and memorable. Through different playing techniques and tonal possibilities, the electric guitar allows me to convey emotion in a way that feels deeply personal and authentic. It has been a significant part of my musical journey, helping me develop my skills, confidence, and creative identity. Beyond performance, the electric guitar has also played an important role in my work as an educator and entrepreneur. It has enabled me to inspire students, share my passion for music, and build a community of aspiring musicians through Guitar Vibes Academy. For me, the electric guitar is more than just an instrument—it is a tool for creativity, connection, and lifelong learning.

Can you walk us through the technique you demonstrated in your clip?

In this clip, I performed an instrumental rendition of "Ae Dil Hai Mushkil" on the electric guitar, focusing on melodic expression and smooth phrasing. The technique involved maintaining the song's vocal-like quality through controlled note articulation, expressive bends, vibrato, and clean transitions between phrases. My primary objective was to preserve the emotional essence of the original composition while allowing the guitar to convey the melody with clarity and feeling. Careful attention was given to dynamics, sustain, and tone, helping create a performance that feels both expressive and engaging. This approach demonstrates how the electric guitar can effectively communicate the depth and emotion of a well-known song without the need for lyrics.

How does your environment influence your music creation?

My environment plays a significant role in shaping my musical creativity. I draw inspiration from everyday experiences, human emotions, cultural traditions, and the people I interact with through my work as a musician and educator. Being surrounded by students, artists, and creative minds constantly exposes me to new perspectives and ideas, which often find their way into my music. I am also deeply inspired by the emotional power of melodies and how music connects people across different backgrounds. Whether it is the energy of a live performance, the dedication of a student learning a new instrument, or simply observing life's moments, each experience contributes to my creative process. I believe that music is a reflection of the world around us, and my environment continually motivates me to create pieces that are expressive, meaningful, and relatable.

What changes did you make to achieve that improvement in your before-and-after clip?

Achieving growth as a musician required a combination of consistent practice, continuous learning, and a willingness to adapt. Over the years, I focused on refining my technical skills, expanding my understanding of different musical styles, and developing a deeper connection with the emotional aspects of music. I also became more disciplined in my approach to learning and teaching, dedicating time to both personal development and mentoring aspiring musicians. Embracing new technologies, exploring creative arrangements, and regularly performing and creating content helped me gain valuable experience and confidence. Perhaps the most important change was shifting my mindset from simply playing music to understanding how music can inspire, educate, and connect people. This perspective has not only improved my musicianship but has also strengthened my ability to contribute meaningfully to the creative community through Guitar Vibes Academy.

What do you enjoy most about teaching others?

What I enjoy most about teaching is witnessing the transformation that takes place when someone discovers their own creative potential. There is something incredibly rewarding about seeing a student progress from their first lesson to confidently performing, creating, and expressing themselves through music. Teaching allows me to share not only technical skills but also the values of discipline, patience, creativity, and self-confidence. Every student has a unique journey, and being a part of that journey is both inspiring and fulfilling. I believe education is about empowering individuals to grow, and music provides a powerful platform for personal and artistic development. As the founder of Guitar Vibes Academy, I am especially passionate about creating an environment where students feel encouraged to explore their talents, overcome challenges, and develop a lifelong appreciation for the arts. Seeing their achievements and knowing that I have contributed to their growth is one of the most meaningful aspects of my work.
