Through the Lens: An Interview with Photographer Girithar Karthik

How did you first get into photography, and what inspired you to focus on visual storytelling?

I was inspired by Steve McCurry from a very young age—I actually started my journey when I was just eight years old. Photography and visual storytelling have always been my passions, and I love capturing moments that tell a story without words.

What moment in your photography journey made you realize you had found your voice as a storyteller?

In 2013, I began digital photography with a Nikon D90. During my travels, I took a lot of pictures and started to understand the stories behind each frame. That's when I realized I had found my voice—I was able to convey narratives through my images.

Can you recall a specific early project or photo that significantly shaped your approach to visual storytelling?

One early photo that shaped my approach was of a man in a boat with the Navi Mumbai Sea Link bridge in the background. That picture narrated a lot of stories—about travel, work, and the connection between people and their environment.

How has your experience in photography grown over the years, and what key lessons have you learned?

Over the last ten years, I've grown immensely as a photographer. I've been inspired by many things, from Steve McCurry's work to the everyday walks I take. The key lesson I've learned is that photography is not just about capturing an image; it's about telling a story and evoking emotions.

This series narrates the connection between nature, people, and the environment. I sequenced the images to show how these elements interact and depend on each other, creating a cohesive story.

What was happening behind the scenes in that behind-the-scenes upload? Share any interesting moments.

This behind-the-scenes clip shows me photographing a baby for a paid shoot. It was a fun and challenging experience, as I had to capture the baby's expressions while ensuring the parents were comfortable.

What made this image challenging, and how did you overcome it?

Reels and Frames

The biggest challenge was my position—I had to frame the gigantic building with people in the foreground while using the sunlight and background skylight effectively. I overcame it by carefully composing the shot and waiting for the right light.

Describe the technique or perspective you used in that experimental photo and why you chose to experiment with it.

Reels and Frames

I used traditional lighting techniques, as my photography is completely based on how light falls on the subject. I chose to experiment with this perspective because lighting is crucial in my work—it can transform an ordinary scene into something extraordinary.

What was the moment or emotion you captured in that fleeting moment photo, and why is it meaningful to you?

Reels and Frames

Early one morning, I saw a young woman who worked as a security guard in a building. I felt her lifestyle and the limited time she had, and I captured that moment to show how she felt and lived. It's meaningful because it reflects the resilience and stories of everyday people.
