Through the Lens of a Nomadic Eye: An Interview with Travel and Aerial Photographer Shounak Pal

How did your journey as a travel and aerial photographer begin?

My journey as a photographer began in 2015. Before that, I had been taking photos occasionally, but from 2015, I took it up as a serious hobby and bought my first camera. I never limited myself to a specific genre, but most of my photos revolve around travel, people, and festivals. I started as an aerial photographer and videographer in 2022, capturing people, landscapes, and festivals from a unique perspective.

What was the moment you realized you wanted to pursue photography professionally?

I decided to pursue photography professionally in 2020, mainly after the Covid-19 pandemic. That period gave me time to reflect and commit to my passion.

How has your experience and style evolved over the years?

I have grown immensely, thanks to my team, Friends Photo Society (FPS), and fellow photographers. I would especially like to mention Shibasish Saha, a great photographer who has inspired and helped me develop over the years.

What is your favorite travel destination for photography and why?

I am from Kolkata, West Bengal, India. This city has given me so much and played a significant role in my growth, so it will always be my top destination.

This aerial shot represents a group of working women drying and sorting red chillies under the scorching sun.

Share a photo that shows the behind-the-scenes of a travel shoot.

In the BTS video, you can see me getting ready with my drone and then flying it from the car while shooting in Kerala. It was an amazing experience during this travel shoot, as it was thrilling and adventurous to fly my drone during the monsoon.

Upload a photo from a challenging location or weather condition.

As you can see, during monsoon we were shooting a horse race under very challenging conditions. We had to be ready and walk through muddy fields and paths before reaching the proper destination.

Upload an edited version of a photo along with the original unedited file.

My editing process involves adjusting the frame, adjusting colors, and masking the subject.

Share a video clip of a time-lapse or drone footage from your travels.

This drone footage was taken during my trip to Kerala using my DJI Air 3S. It was shot during extreme monsoon season.

Upload a portrait or candid shot of a local person you met during your travels.

The people in the attached photo are a group of local football players who practice every evening. Me and my team were shooting for a FIFA video related to football during the World Cup 2026, and we met them then. We included these people in our football video as well.
