A National Stage for India's Dancers Is Now Open

Entries are now open for the WallMag Dancer of the Year Awards 2026 — a national recognition for creators in our Dancing community, and the broadest dance award we have ever put our name to. It is not built around one style, one city, or one kind of training. It is built around the simple idea that a dancer who is genuinely good deserves to be seen, whether they learned in a gharana, a studio, a college fest, or a rooftop with a phone propped against a water tank.

This is a celebration first and a competition second. The craft is the point: the discipline behind a clean line, the years behind an effortless turn, the instinct behind a freestyle that could not be repeated even by the dancer who danced it. Submissions are live from today and close on 22 October 2026.

About the Award

The Dancer of the Year Awards celebrate the performers who move India — classical soloists carrying centuries of grammar in their wrists, street crews who built their vocabulary from the internet and each other, choreographers who think in groups of eight, and self-taught dancers whose only teacher was repetition. It is a pan-style, pan-language national award, open across twenty categories in five groups, with no gatekeeping by form or following.

Recognition here is deliberately two-sided. Every entry is seen by the WallMag creator community, whose votes decide the Top 100 finalists. Only then does an expert dance jury begin its work, reviewing those hundred finalists to choose the Top 3 winners. Community voting alone would simply reward whoever arrives with the largest audience. A jury alone would be opaque. Together, they produce something a dancer can put on a profile and a stranger can actually reason about.

For winners and finalists, the outcome is national visibility, partner-brand rewards, a place in WallMag Creator Magazine, and a recognition certificate that carries a verifiable process behind it.

Who It's For

Any creator based in India, over eighteen, who dances. That is the whole eligibility bar. Hobbyist or professional, trained or self-taught, with a following or without one.

  • Classical soloists in Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Semi-Classical and Folk traditions.
  • Street and urban dancers — hip hop, breaking, locking and popping, and freestylers who refuse a label.
  • Contemporary, jazz, salsa and Latin, and belly dancers working in Western and international forms.
  • Bollywood and fusion performers who live where cinema, classical and street meet.
  • Choreographers and crews entering as a duet or a group, where the piece matters more than any one dancer in it.
  • Choreographers entering the composition itself, and fitness-dance creators working in Zumba and allied forms.

If you have ever been told your form is "not the kind of dance that wins awards", this one was written with you in mind.

What Kind of Work We're Excited to See

We are excited about performances you choreographed, performed, or led and fully own — in any style, language or tradition. A clean phone recording of a genuinely strong performance will always beat an expensively shot weak one, so do not let production budget decide whether you enter. Portrait reels and landscape or square video are both welcome.

Each entry should be a single performance or a coherent piece that tells one story. Three principles govern every submission:

  • Authentic ownership: Each submission must be created and fully owned by the creator. Where you dance to someone else's music, the choreography and the performance must be yours.
  • Maximum scope: Up to 5 unique projects may be shared.
  • Integrity first: Any plagiarism, copied work, stock content, or AI-generated content results in immediate disqualification.

Enter each piece under the category that fits it best:

  • Western & International — Contemporary Dance, Jazz Dance, Salsa / Latin, Belly Dance

Enter Your Strongest Work

You have five weeks — spend them on the work rather than the paperwork. Go back through what you have already danced this year and find the pieces you are quietly proud of. Look at whether the camera actually caught the footwork, or whether it needs one more take from a better angle. Decide which of your forms is genuinely your strongest, not merely your most recent.

Then submit a considered shortlist rather than whatever happened to be on your phone. Entries close 22 October 2026. That difference tends to show.
