Wildlife Through My Lens: An Interview with Photographer Nipun Raj

Wildlife Through My Lens: An Interview with Photographer Nipun Raj

How did your journey as a photographer begin?

My journey as a photographer began after I completed my NEET examination in 2025. I visited my Nani's home in Ranchi, and during a rainy monsoon evening, I picked up my phone and started clicking photographs. Capturing the beauty of that moment sparked my interest in photography, and since then, my passion for it has continued to grow.

What was the first moment you realized you had a passion for photography?

I realized I had a true passion for photography when I started participating in photography competitions across various colleges of Delhi University. Through these competitions, I learned a lot, improved my skills, and gained valuable experience. Most importantly, I genuinely enjoyed the entire process, which made me realize that photography was something I wanted to pursue seriously.

How has your experience and style grown over the years?

To be honest, I'm still learning and growing as a photographer. It has been around 1.5 years since I started this journey, and every experience has taught me something new. Over time, I've improved my understanding of composition, lighting, and storytelling through images. My style continues to evolve as I experiment with different subjects and techniques, and I look forward to learning even more in the years ahead.

Which genre of photography—wildlife, street, or portrait—resonates most with you and why?

Wildlife photography resonates with me the most. There's something incredibly raw and unpredictable about capturing animals in their natural habitat. It requires patience, respect for nature, and a keen eye for fleeting moments. The thrill of waiting for the perfect shot and the connection I feel with wildlife is unmatched.

What makes your wildlife photo special?

Reels and Frames

The image is a powerful, close-up portrait of a tiger emerging from a stark, pitch-black background, defined by its dramatic low-key lighting. Warm, golden light strikes the left side of the animal's face, beautifully highlighting the sharp details of its amber eye, white whiskers, and rich fur textures, while the right side falls heavily into deep shadow. This intense chiaroscuro effect leaves its second eye only subtly visible in the darkness, creating a moody, majestic, and captivatingly direct gaze toward the camera.

What story does your street photo convey?

Reels and Frames

The image conveys a quiet, introspective narrative of a working-class individual caught in a fleeting moment of deep isolation and focus amidst the daily grind. The harsh, directional spotlight of the sun cuts through heavy shadows to illuminate the man as he looks down, entirely absorbed in a private task like handling money, while the vibrant blue of a closed metal shutter acts as a stark, textured backdrop. By engulfing the rest of the environment in darkness, the composition strips away the noise of the street, transforming a mundane slice of market life into a dramatic, poetic study of human solitude and quiet respite.

Describe the subject and context of the portrait you uploaded.

Reels and Frames

The image is a powerful, high-contrast black-and-white portrait of an elderly man whose deeply weathered features, prominent wrinkles, and striking white beard convey a lifetime of experience and resilience. Wearing a large, traditionally wrapped turban and a simple, light-colored button-down shirt, he locks an intense, unblinking gaze directly onto the lens, creating an intimate and arresting connection with the viewer. The tight, vertical medium close-up positions him against a rough, dark stone wall, utilizing a gritty, tactile backdrop and soft, natural lighting to emphasize raw textures over color, capturing an authentic, documentary-style slice of life.

What adjustments did you apply in the edited vs. unedited comparison?

In comparing the two uploaded images, the original raw photo has been modified through several distinct post-processing adjustment techniques. First, a significant color grading shift has been applied, replacing the cool, muted green tones of the original background with a much warmer, golden-brown hue. Second, the overall exposure and contrast have been boosted, making the highlights on the hands pop and deep tones richer, which enhances the three-dimensional depth of the subjects. Finally, clarity and sharpening filters have been increased, notably accentuating the fine details of the skin texture, arm hair, and the metallic edges of the watch, giving the edited image a punchier, more dramatic, and stylized commercial look compared to the flat lighting of the raw image.

How did you handle the lighting challenge in that photo?

Reels and Frames

To manage the intense high-contrast lighting challenge in this image, I deliberately embraced the moody, low-key chiaroscuro effect while preserving critical details in both the deep shadows and the warm highlights. Because the strong, warm-toned overhead light creates harsh, localized illumination on the notebook and the subject's arm, exposing primarily for these bright highlights prevents the text and skin from clipping into pure white. To prevent the rest of the frame from dissolving into complete, muddy darkness, I introduced a subtle, neutral fill light using a reflector just off-camera to gently lift the deep shadows on the rose and the background texture. Finally, carefully managing the camera's dynamic range and shooting in RAW gave me the necessary post-processing flexibility to fine-tune the contrast, ensuring the rich, cinematic atmosphere is maintained without losing the gritty, realistic textures of the crumpled paper and skin.
